'The Day the Earth Stood Still' panel: Hollywood + real scientists = awkward

But perhaps to calm the fears of the science community, Fox and Caltech arranged a panel discussion last Friday at Caltech, in which astrophysicist Sean Carroll, robotic engineer Joel Burdick, director Scott Derrickson and Klaatu himself, Keanu Reeves, sat down to discuss the science -- and science fiction -- of the movie.

Did the two worlds come together harmoniously? Not really.

The audience, made up of Caltech students, was a stickler for accuracy. When a quick flash of a top secret government computer screen flashed a Microsoft logo the audience howled. "It's gonna crash," one student (no doubt a hardcore Mac-man) called out.

Then came the Q&A portion of the evening in which the Hollywood duo were peppered with exam-ready questions: "Do you think the laws of physics would change in different parts of the universe?" and, later, "Are you human?"

The former was answered handily by the scientific half of the panel (not shown in the video above), but it was apparent that Derrickson and Reeves were left bewildered. "These are the strangest questions," Derrickson announced at one point. And a little later, he glanced at his watch and asked the audience, "How much longer will this go on?"

REMINDED OF SCARS

The dream started with me and Watson descending down the stairs to the basement room. Small dirty hall, completely abandoned place, old papers, rotten stink, green and brown (mostly brown) visibility. I was half awaiting fog to come and eat us or Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman coming.

Then I looked to the room on the right. Blood on the sheets. He was holding the girl there. There was a lot of blood for a small girl. She was not there. I do not know if she´s dead or not.

Came back to the hall. Started to shake my head furiously. It helps to go through to the other side, so I could see with his eyes. Saw that it is my younger detective? Or not? I am not sure. Came closer to the mirror. Saw something in the mirror and I don´t know what it was but after that it just stopped.

I thought that he got the flat for someone else through someone else, whom he latter killed, so the only one who knows his face is the girl. And maybe me. But I am not sure what I saw.

- What is the horror story no-one ever made work?

- There is a definite room for a good, dirty, intelligent vampire story. The concept about family (check moleskine) sounds promising.

- The astronauts story has a vibe. Dick and Strugacki brothers and many other influences.

- The incorporation of Cocorosie´s ´Werewolf´ into a story. Probably into ´WINGS´ or ´FANGS´ or whatever I´ll call it. It should be a life of nineteen year old who´s going through rough path. He´s becoming a werewolf. And he likes SM. And does a lot of things. Like, amphetamines and so on. And DJ´s.

He comes through one very great experience, sharing similarities with the initiation in the Illuminatus book 1, and then understands that he´s tripping while he saves the world. So he´s back on the beach and he builds a castle from sand and smiles when the water gets it down.



The book should end in the mood of ´Plays John Cassavettes part II´.

RUN NOTES

So this has to be a showcase of how violence changes men. And why are men violent. This requires serious studying. Also, this has to be the most realistic, most brutal, graphic and over the top while 100 percent rooted in world as it is today.

Think Bourne Trilogy meets The Heat meets old B-Movies like Commando meets the good Crank Bits meets Unforgiven meets Scarface meets Death Wish.

Our hero has a safe place in his dreams. Why does he go and hunt Callahan down? The classic ´they killed my family´ trick? More like old friend. He has no family. Just sister. She will be killed too, with her child, unexpectedly. The story has to pull all the punches.

Callahan will be the meanest son of the bitch, which will highly contrast with the idealistic young friend of our hero from their days back.

´I think where we went wrong.´

Callahan maybe unable to help raped woman when in Somalia, then getting almost killed, horribly disfigured, lived through..has to have a good, realistic story of how he went over to the dark side.
